‘“Trench Kisses, A
Collection of Classics and Christine Keeler.”, that is the name Christopher
Bailey chose for his fall 2013 Burberry collection and as the name suggests, Christine
Margaret Keeler is an English former model and showgirl whose scandalous
involvement with a British government minister, John Profumo discredited the
Conservative government of Harold Macmillan in 1963, in what is known as the
Profumo Affair.
In a colour palette of black, white, camel and oxblood, the ladylike
collection had a classic, sexy, romantic and sixties’ feel to it, reminiscent
to Christine Keeler ‘s scandalous era . Hearts and leopard prints gave a new twist
to the classic heritage collection of trenches and dresses. As intended by
Bailey, translucent rubber pencil skirt with heart-print knickers beneath and
rubber on trench sleeves, tops and skirts gave the collection a sexy (read
kinky) edge. Angora sweaters, bold striped shirt, pants and corset dresses with
shiny gold collars had its own classic yet contemporary appeal.
“I liked the idea of
this very established, classic heritage world meeting a sassy, sweet, sexy,
subversive world,” Bailey said. “I like the idea of taking something that has
gravitas, this 158 year old brand, but making it subversive and kinky.”
